About the event

During the time of COVID-19, we encourage everyone to use their own discretion when it comes to attendance. Indigenous Ceremony has been exempt from health advisories, however, it should be noted that due to the nature of a Sweat Lodge, social distancing is not possible. It becomes unsafe to wear a mask in the Lodge, and communal singing is of central importance in the Ceremony. We would be honoured to have you join us if you are interested in coming and comfortable with the logistics above.

The Community Sweat Lodge takes place on the Stoney Nakoda Reserve, near the town of Mînî Thnî (Morley). These Lodges are run by Wade Maude, who is Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk), and we are honoured to gather on the land which is stewarded by Helmer Twoyoungmen and family.

Just a reminder that it is about a 45–60-minute drive to the Lodge location from Calgary, towards Canmore. Arrival time on Saturday is 10:45 am; please give yourself plenty of time so you have an opportunity to sit with the land before we enter the Lodge at noonish.

Please Bring:

  • Plenty of water
  • A towel or two
  • Weather-appropriate clothing to be outside all day (including boots in winter/wet spring/summer)
  • Tobacco offering (loose, pipe, or cigarettes)
  • Potluck item to share if comfortable
  • Donation if desired

What to Wear Inside the Lodge:

  • Men: gym shorts
  • Women: modest shirt, long skirt
  • Non-Binary or Two-Spirited – modest clothing at your personal discretion

Please note - Individuals on their moontime are asked to attend at a later date. We're happy to chat about this protocol if you have more questions.

Sweat Lodge Teachings

Sweat Lodge Teachings will be shared before going into the Sweat Lodge, at around 11 am. It's an opportunity to learn about some of the protocols and history and ask questions. This also gives newcomers an opportunity to know whom they are sitting with and help make sure everyone is comfortable.

Exact directions to the Sweat Lodge will be shared upon sign-up.

Please note: Winter Community Sweat Lodges are weather-dependent. -15C is the threshold for this gathering; please keep an eye on event updates as the forecast changes.
